Carers Week 2013 will take place from Monday, 10th June to Sunday, 16th June. The annual event is a national awareness raising campaign that aims to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for.
The theme for Carers Week 2013 is ‘Prepared to Care?’ and it will focus on how carers in the UK are coping, how effectively Government is supporting them and whether we are all prepared for a future of growing caring responsibilities. In particular, the campaign will look at how caring can impact on our daily lives and, with a growing elderly population and increasing incidence of disability and serious illness, encourage people to think they about how they would cope in a caring role.
There are over 6.5 million carers in the UK and it is estimated that every day 6,000 people take on new caring responsibilities. 1 in 8 workers are being forced to combine work with unpaid caring responsibilities. Throughout Carers Week organisations across the country are encouraged to take part and organise events at which carers can be given information about caring and what support is available locally. It also presents an opportunity to celebrate the amazing work they do in looking after others.
In the Harrogate and Ripon area of North Yorkshire, where Carefound Home Care offers specialist home care and dementia care services to elderly people, the number of people spending 20 hours a week or more as an unpaid carer has increased by 30% over the last year – among the biggest rises in the UK. There are now 16,188 unpaid carers in the Harrogate District. Carers Week 2013 offers an opportunity to celebrate these efforts and provide support against the negative effects this can have on a carer’s health or their ability to manage a full-time job.
Carefound Home Care will be opening up its Harrogate-based offices throughout Carers Week 2013 during which time individuals or families wishing to learn more about supporting elderly people, including those with dementia, are welcome to pop in and meet with the team.
