Considering Elderly Care Options
The process of considering elderly care is a difficult and sensitive time for the whole family, and all too often people have to make life changing decisions at short notice. We appreciate that the circumstances of every individual and their family can differ, and strive at all times to help you and / or your loved one be as informed as possible in making decisions regarding care, including how to pay for it.
Existing care options
A brief outline of elderly care options available today is provided below:
-
Home care: Wide ranging care services offered in the comfort and familiarity of an individual’s own home
-
Residential care home: Accommodation, meals and personal care provided in a communal environment. Residential care homes do not provide nursing care, and so are unsuitable for individuals with serious medical conditions
-
Residential nursing home: Like a residential care home, residential nursing homes provide accommodation, meals and personal care in a communal environment. They do offer nursing care and have qualified nurses in attendance
-
Assisted living: Also referred to as extra care housing, care villages or close care housing, these facilities typically comprise apartments / bungalows with care / support available on-site
-
Sheltered / retirement housing: Typically apartments with an on-site warden and alarm system, but no care provision
-
Respite care: Short-stay care, either in the form of home care or residential care, providing family member(s) or existing carer(s) with a break from caring for loved ones
