Dementia Awareness Week is an annual event organised by Alzheimer’s Society aimed at raising awareness of dementia and how to help. This year it took place from 18th – 24th May and was focused on the campaign – “Don’t bottle it up”.

Many people may have or know somebody who has dementia, and find it difficult to talk about. They may feel scared, confused or even ashamed. They may also be hoping the problem goes away so they don’t have to deal with it. It is however vital that people feel able to speak about dementia and are aware of the support available to them in their local community. This year’s campaign encouraged people to open up and talk about dementia as much as possible.

The week raised a huge amount of publicity for dementia and was supported by various celebrities such as Dame Judi Dench and Alice Eve. In North Yorkshire specifically, there were events across towns such as Harrogate, Ripon and Wetherby. In Ripon and Harrogate, local charity Dementia Forward ran a play inspired by local stories in association with Dementia UK. In Wetherby, Dementia and Mental Health Liaison Practitioners from Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust were on hand to answer questions in Wetherby Health Centre for a day.
