The Harrogate team of Carefound Home Care have been celebrating the festive season with local seniors, delivering over 150 mince pies and Christmas cards plus lots of cheer across North Yorkshire.

Loneliness is a growing concern amongst older people, often triggered by devastating life events such as bereavement. Not only is it unpleasant to experience, but it can also increase the risk of developing serious medical conditions, such as strokes, mental health issues and dementia.

At Christmas time the heart-breaking reality of loneliness can become even clearer. According to new research by Age UK nearly a million (928,000) older people feel lonelier at Christmas and a similar number (873,000) don’t see or hear from anybody for days on end over the Christmas period.

Yorkshire itself has previously been named a ‘loneliness hotspot’ for older people by The Silver Line Charity which, in North Yorkshire alone, has received over 12,000 calls to its helpline since its launch in 2013.

Lorna Dawber, Home Care Manager for Carefound Home Care in Harrogate, said:

“We are busy delivering festive gifts and cheer to our elderly clients across North Yorkshire and our professional carers have loved taking the time to celebrate Christmas with them.”

“Celebrating important events is a key part of our personalised home care service and helps us develop trusted, enjoyable relationships. It also contributes to combatting loneliness, especially amongst those who won’t see family over the Christmas period or who find this time of year brings back difficult memories.”
