Elmet and Rothwell MP, Alec Shelbrooke, has visited the offices of local elderly home care anddementia care specialist, Carefound Home Care. Ahead of a Dementia Summit Mr Shelbrooke is to host in January, he met with Carefound Home Care founder and Director Oliver Stirk to learn more about their model of care and how they are seeking to improve the lives of elderly people in Yorkshire.

Carefound Home Care, which started life 3½ years ago, has expanded to employ over 35 people in Harrogate, Ripon, Wetherby and North Leeds and has helped more than 150 families to date through its hourly home care and full-time live-in care services. They have won various local and national awards for the care they provide which includes a full range of care options for elderly people wishing to stay at home plus specialist support for families experiencing conditions such as dementia orParkinson’s.

Instead of working under contracts with councils like many in the sector, Carefound Home Care provides tailored, one-to-one care to families either privately or in conjunction with NHS commissioning teams. This enables them to spend more time with their clients offering a truly personalised service, and has also allowed them to develop a unique focus on health and wellbeing outcomes such as mobility and medication management, reducing urine and chest infections and avoiding hospital or care home admissions.

Mr Shelbrooke commented: “Dementia is the next biggest health issue on the horizon and the number of people it affects is growing at speed. It is therefore vital that partners work together to deliver the very best care to those living with dementia and I was extremely interested to learn how Carefound Home Care deliver services to people living in my constituency”.

Mr Stirk commented: “We invited Alec in to our offices having seen his efforts to raise awareness of the need for better dementia care services both in his constituency and in the House of Commons. It was great to talk through how we go about supporting elderly people at home in Wetherby and North Leeds and, in particular, to discuss our collaboration with the Contented Dementia Trust through which all of our professional home carers are trained in their specialist approach to caring for people with dementia called the SPECAL method”.
