Using first aid training in a choking emergency – Shelley’s story

Shelley Ross, an hourly care professional at Carefound Home Care West Bridgford, was supporting a client at home when they suddenly began choking on a piece of toast during breakfast.
Shelley put her training into action
Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Shelley acted immediately and used her emergency first aid training to help dislodge the obstruction. The ambulance service was called, and the attending crew later praised Shelley for her quick thinking and effective response.
Following the incident, the client was taken to hospital for further assessment. While there, she was treated for a chest infection with antibiotics and oxygen before being safely discharged home.
The client’s family also expressed their gratitude and praised Shelley for the care, reassurance and support she provided during the incident.

- Online first aid training – provides a basic understanding of the knowledge behind the techniques used in emergency first aid situations and introduces resuscitation, recovery position, choking and anaphylaxis, as well as burns, bleeds, broken bones and stroke
- Face-to-face first aid training – practical training on how to deliver first aid and basic life support
